I’m writing a paper for college about table manners around the world. Does anyone have any advice or experience with another country’s rules for eating-what’s polite or impolite? And how does this show values of the particular culture?

I know in many Asian countries it’s considered impolite to eat with your left hand (alas for me, a lefty), and in more remote places you can see that this started out as a practical issue. Basically, there’s no toilet paper in many places, just a large bucket of water which you are meant to use to wash yourself after using the facilities, as it were. It was generally understood that the left hand was used in the loo, so the right was saved for eating. I don’t know if this implies anything about values, just cleanliness. However, the notion of the left as the “unclean” hand has stuck even though it is rarely applicable anymore.

I went to Nigeria this summer, and while i was there i was a ble to pick up on a few nof the habits. First off, when they wash their dishes, they try to leave a little water on them to show that they are indeed clean. Then everything is eaten with silverwear. they are a very forgiving culture, bu tyou are not supposed to eat anything with your hands. When you sit down to eat, you always address the head of the household first. I guess you could say that they value respect for their elders, and a strong sense of hospitality.
