Question

on 12/2/07, zoester asked about Italy:

Even though I have been to Italy the last couple of years, I cannot remember this….if you travel from Milan to areas south, can a ticket be purchased in Milan for the ENTIRE trip, or, if you have to change trains, say in Genoa, do you buy another ticket there for the next leg of the trip? So silly, but I just don’t remember and I am taking a couple newbies with me this year and want everything to be as smooth as possible. Will try to get a direct train from Milan to Monerosso, but it might not be possible.

I am assuming you are talking about getting to the Cinque Terre. Last time I was there, I actually came across from Tuscany rather than down from Lombardy, but I believe that whatever direction you came from, you would have to first get to La Spezia and then take the Regionale Train to whichever train you want to start your Cinque Terre experience in. If you are planning to hike along the coast, as you should be planning, remember that some of the more popular trails now involve a nominal fee and you’ll be able to get tickets for them at I believe any train station in the Cinque Terre
