Question

on 1/13/08, Jesa asked about Italy:

Hi, I hope this isn’t a silly question. I booked my trip through STA on Aitalia Airlines and I just got my intirary from virtually there/STA. And on the schedule, one of the bullet points says “Smoking” and there is a “yes” by it. I thought all commercial airlines were non-smoking? I have horrible asthma so I’m kinda freaking and hoping that my initial thought of no planes can have smoking on it was right. Does anyone know or can give me any insight?

Thanks :) ciao!

It’s definitely not a silly question, especially if you have really bad asthma! But you’ll be fine. It might be an old smoking seat, meaning that at one point it was a designated seat for smoking and the distinction just hasn’t been corrected (we use a lot of antiquated and outdated systems in the travel industry!). But it’s an international aviation regulation that all commercial flights be non-smoking. I’ve never, ever heard of a airplane, other than someone’s private jet, that would allow smoking. Especially a large airline like Alitalia. If you want a more official confirmation, I’d recommend giving Alitalia a call at 800-223-5730 if only to ease your mind.
