Question

on 3/2/08, Amy1234 asked about Taiwan:

When is the best time to visit Taiwan??? I know typhoon season is coming up, but does it even make sense to plan my trip around it? I heard that typhoons are so random there.

Thanks!

The best time to visit Taiwan is spring or fall.
Typhoon season is June to early October and the summers are hot and humid and it’s also rainy season.
There are a variety of festivals throughout the year, too, so it depends on what you want to do.
When are you thinking of going? Feel free to email us and we’d be happy to talk to you in more detail and give you some quotes. gwu@statravel.com

Hi Amy1234! I lived in Taiwan for two years, and I would have to agree with jengwu there that Spring and Fall are the best times to go. The typhoons are just like hurricanes – sometimes there are a bunch of them, sometimes very few. They can be like really strong rainstorms, or they can destroy infrastructure. That’s why it’s a bargain to go to the Carribbean in the summer – you are risking having your vacation ruined.

But Taiwan is really, swelteringly, unbearably hot in the summer. The city I lived in, Taiching, was one of the mildest places and it was still quite overwhelming. Taipei, where I imagine you’d spend a lot of time, is insanely muggy.

However, please don’t let me dissuade you from going! I love Taiwan so much, I always want people to visit and see what a lively and beautiful place it is. The only reason I would suggest not going this summer is because of the Olympics. Just travel as far away from August as you can, as trans-Pacific flights are already well booked up and priced high.

Please give me a call or shoot me an email if you’d like information about prices to fly to Taiwan, as well as ideas of what to do and where to stay when you’re there. I traveled all over the island when I lived there, and have plenty of suggestions!
