I’m going to San Francisco at the end of July, and noticed all the affordable hotels don’t have air-conditioning. Has anyone had any experience staying in SFO during the summer sans air-con? Right now I’m booked at the Mosser, which looks very cool, but only has ceiling fans. If anyone has any info about the Mosser, about SFO weather in late July, or anything in between, I’d be grateful for your input.
Also, since I’m going there – what are your recommendations for must see and do? Cheap eats? Tourist traps to avoid?
Thanks! – Francesca :)
SFO is pretty stable in the summer. I was there late in July and it was still chilly enough to wear a hoodie at night. Ceiling fans should be enough to keep the room cool.
I stayed on market street in the tenderloin district which i do not recommend (stay away from the tenderlion at night).
It looks like the Mosser is walking distance from SFMoma – a great sister art museum of the Modern Museum of Art in New York City. And looks like you are also near Chinatown!Obviously you want to go to chinatown one night for dinner—great dim sum restaurants.
Haight-Ashbury is a tourist trap, but its worth the long walk uphill if you have never been, and there are also a few great restaurants, juice bars and coffee shops. Try the Squat & Gobble for crepes, and then take a walk all the way to the end to go to Ameoba Records — a huge and cheap new and used music universe.
At the end of Haight Ashbury you’ll be near Golden Gate Park – a must see. Inside there is a japanese Zen tea garden, with feng shui walkways, pagodas and flora. I think if you go before 10 am its free (otherwise about $5.00). Also up in GGP is the Conservatory, modeled after the famous one in London. This i believe is free on Tuesdays. Finally there is a new art/culture museum in GGP (the DeYoung) and you can get a few $$ off admission with your ISIC.
San Fran is my favorite city. There are tons of cool things to do. As far a air con goes you don’t really need it. I was there in early August and it was rather chilly some days.
If you travel North to Sonoma and Napa it can be very hot, in the 90’s. If you go to Napa you have to see Cakebread Cellars, and maybe BR Cohn.
China town is a waste of time and money, there is no reason to bother with it. The Ferry Market is incredible. Saturday is the best day to go. There are 100’s of amazing food stalls and stores, and the Slanted Door restaurant. It was voted one of the top five asian restaurants in the country. One of the best meals I’ve ever had.
There is great shopping near Union Square and some of the best people watching. Have fun in San Fran!
