I’m planning a trip to Europe this summer. I will be flying into London, then going to Madrid, Italy, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, and then four weeks in Prague for school. I’m debating whether to book planes for the whole trip or take trains between Madrid and Prague. A rail pass looks cheaper, but I’m wondering if its too time consuming. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it. I’m also looking for advice on hostels and cheap or free activities. Any help would be awesome!
Hey—how long are you planning to travel between London and Prague? Trains are a great, relatively inexpensive way to get around if you have a railpass, but it’s true that sometimes incorporating a flight for one of the longer journeys could be worth it if you are short on time. The budget carriers are good, but keep in mind that 1. they only allow 20 kg of checked luggage (44 lbs), 2. they don’t fly between all cities that you may need, 3. the airports are usually pretty far out of the city centers, unlike train stations, and 4. they aren’t always as cheap as they appear once you add in taxes. Hostels are also a good idea for single travelers—single rooms in hotels can be pricey, plus hostels are a great way to meet other travelers and get ideas for things to do in the city you’re visiting, (including free stuff!) not to mention many have kitchens where you can cook, if you like. Have you thought about a tour—when you break down the costs on a daily basis, they can be a good choice, economically, plus they take care of the transportation, accomodation, etc.
