I’m going to Croatia next week (as part of my Eastern Europe tour), with a Croatia rail pass, and am trying to decide on cities to visit on the way down to the Dalmation Coast. I’m planning on going through Zagreb on the way back, but on the way down via Ljubljana, Slovenia, was thinking of going through Rijeka or Pula on the way down to Zadar. I found travel times of 4-7.5 hours (Lonely Planet v. Let’s Go) from Ljubljana to Pula, and 2.5 hours from Pula to Rijeka, but can’t find any times from Rijeka to Zadar. I’m pretty sure I can make it from Ljubljana to Zadar and stay a day/night in Rijeka on the way, but Pula seems more interesting to stay in instead – just not sure if the travel time from Pula to Zadar by train is really doable in a reasonable day.
If you have the chance to make it down to Split, the city it amazing and you can catch ferries to the islands off the coast of croatia. the only thing is that instead of an outbound train, it will say there is an outbound train when in fact you have to catch a bus at the trainstation and the bus will take you to another train station to catch the train because the city does not have that many trains going outbound.
