Travelling to Asia cheaply is always a tricky question. The best way to minimize cost is to travel in the fall or spring, when rates are lower, and, if possible, fly into and out of the gateway cities. Gateway cities in the States are either San Francisco, or preferably LA, and it’s usually cheapest to fly into Bangkok, but sometimes you might find some deals to KL. Then, once you’re over there, take the bus everywhere!
