Hello all, I’m Tyler, a pre-gap year 17-year-old, with virtually no outside-US travel experience [breath], in need of advice.
General plan
I’ve been researching options/convincing my parents in preparation of a gap year after my senior year of high school. I hope to nab some sort of applicable business (preferably entertainment business) internship or affordable learning experience in some place foreign enough to force me to adapt.
Criteria
Here are some things that I’m looking for in my gap year. I marked essentials with an (e) and preferences with a (p). I also numbered each so replies are easier:
1. A paid/unpaid—preferably paid, of course—business internship/reasonably priced learning experience (e)
2. Affordable living/a host family—preferably a host family if in a country of foreign language (e)
3. An affordable insurance plan (e)
4. A program to help me do all this as a reasonable cost (e)
5. Language lessons (p)
6. A country where I don’t speak the language—so as to learn a new language (p)
7. A travel partner (p, but not entirely necessary)
Based on those criteria, does anyone have any advice/suggestions?
It’s still up in the air where exactly I’ll be travelling, so input on that would be great, as would input on insurance plans and gap year programs.
Thank you all in advance!

6). 24 hour emergency travel, medical and emergency assistance
Tyrannosaurus, I’m impressed by how organized you are and by the scope of your trip. Are you near an STA Travel by any chance? You should definitely stop in and pick up brochures on i-to-i, ciee, global languages, and the insurance. I think you will be able to meet all of your goals. We can’t provide a travel partner, but you will definitely meet fellow adventurers like yourself once you get started.
You can find an STA store near you on statravel.com. Cheers!
Hey Tyler!
Just to add to what’s already been mentioned I would definetly recommend checking out a few hostels in your travels. I always meet some very interesting and open minded people while backpacking!
