Question

on 8/15/07, KelseyLind asked about Greece:

I am trying to plan a summer 08 trip. I plan on leaving June 1 and staying until August 15. I want to go down to Argentina first, travel around Argentina and Brazil and then head to Greece and spending a good 6 weeks traveling around Greece, South of France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Montenegro, Switzerland, and Morocco. I’m feeling really, REALLY overwhelmed by information, and mostly conflicting information. A) Should I really be trying to plan this much in advance and B) would it be ridiculously cheaper to go in May/June. I am really looking forward to beautiful beaches and beautiful weather in July/August, but if it is about the same and the prices are way cheaper I’d rather go that route. As of right now Im budgeting 15,000. It sounds like a lot but will it be enough?

Any advice would help as Im a brand new traveler.

Also, Any ideas on SAFE ways to meet Travel Buddies, Im afraid of goign alone but nobody is all that interested in commiting to a 2 month exscursion with me. :)

Hi KelseyLind! Your trip sounds amazing! I guess the first thing I would ask is, how early can you go? I would probably suggest switching your itinerary—southern Europe first, then Argentina. July and August are THE high season in all of the places you want to travel in. It will be very crowded, difficult to find accommodation or transportation, and expensive. If you can start in Europe in May, that would probably be best.

The second thing I would suggest is to do part of Europe (or Morocco) on one of our many cool tours. We don’t have granny busses—these are tours with an age restriction of 18-35 that give you an authentic, fun experience. It’s a great way to meet people with whom you can then do more traveling right after your trip.

Your budget sounds good—you probably won’t need that much for a summer of travel but it’s always better to have more than you need.

Give me a call or send me an email. I think it’s best to plan early and take care a lot of the logistics early so when you finally get there you’re not spending an inordinate amount of time tromping around lost with an enormous backpack weighing you down.

However, we don’t have any of our airfare contracts yet for next summer. I would start your serious planning six – seven months before your trip.

I hope to hear from you—I’d love to help you with what sounds like a dream trip! Cheers – Francesca cam@statravel.com / 617-576-4623

Kelsey – You’re plan makes me jealous!! I think you should totally start planning this now! It is a big trip and you want to have it all nailed down well enough in advance to make it the best experience possible. Research the areas you want to travel to, ask people who have been to these places about these places, nail down an itinerary and then start booking flights in January.

I think 15,000 is for sure going to be enough money! Of course it depends on what kind of traveler you are – hotel vs. hostel, etc. Once you have figured out your schedule, you will be able to figure out specific costs. We can help you with that too!

As far as flights go, it won’t be much better traveling in June than August. However, you might save money on accomidations, etc if you travel in May/June. I imagine you will find some festival or dated activity that you will want to do in one of these countries. Use that to help you in your decision.

Hmm meeting travel buddies that want to do exactly what you want to do is going to be tough. I would talk to your friends about meeting up at different points with you. Also start spreading the word that you will be going to these places. People who have traveled there might know people who are still there that can show you around. You can always post on here when the time gets closer to see who will be in some of the places you are when you will be there.

Have fun planning this awesome adventure and feel free to contact me if you want to talk about your travels!

Hey Kelsey,
As far as the Europe portion of your trip goes, I definalty agree with the other posters that you should consider doing a tour. I just got back from a Topdeck tour of Europe and it was amazing. I met fellow travelers all around my age, and they were all soooo cool! Plus you get to see all these countries you have listed above on a budget, with lots of free food and free admission to sights, and of course, your transportation and accomodation in really cool hotels. As far as Greece goes, doing a cruise of the Islands is always a hugely popular trip, and STA has some great deals with Contiki and Topdeck to get you on an awesome boat with, again, very friendly likeminded and young travelers! Planning this far ahead is awesome, and the earlier you book your trip at STA the more availability we will have on our flights, getting you the best price possible! If you have any questions about tours, definalty get in touch with an STA Travel advisor, if you have any questions about the Topdeck tour I did feel free to call me at 401-331-5810! Hitting up this sight will definalty get you lots of great advice and try joining our facebook page and network with other students who have been or are going where you are going, too!
