Eindhoven – huge parties in the town squares when the soccer team won the Dutch league championship.
My crazy Dutch friend Ingrid and I at a Queens Day celebration (April 30 every year) in Eindhoven. The whole country shuts down and parties all day and well into the night!
Every square in the city has a different DJ, so you can dance the day (and night away). Don’t forget to wear orange, the color of the Dutch royal family!
Utrecht is a more “typical” Dutch city, about 30 minutes by train from Amsterdam. It’s a great place for shopping without the crowds of A’dam, and there are dozens of fantastic outdoor cafes for afternoon drinks and people watching.
A typical scene – Amsterdam is full of narrow pedestrian walkways, corner bars, and of course, bicycles!
No photo can encompass the sounds, smells and experiences of Oktoberfest… but here’s a little visual idea!
Touristy? Yes. But when else can you sit in a giant wooden clog (klompen in Dutch)? Look for this one near Dam Square.
In late Nov., Sinterklaas arrives by boat from Spain, floating into each village with his “Zwarte Piet” helpers.
After Sinterklaas gets off his boat, he rides through the village on a white horse, and everyone follows him to the town square.
Sinterklaas and his Zwarte Piets are welcomed in the town of Den Dungen, and on Dec. 5 the Zwarte Piets will deliver bags of presents to children by leaving them on the doorstep, ringing the bell and running away.
