Riding Against the Sun

This photo was taken at sunset in the Western Sahara. Our group was traveling through the dunes on our way back to the camp in the Erg Chebbi region of Morocco. The camel caravan was about 40 animals long. I was riding among the first in the train and looked behind me. The length of the train was cresting the top of a dune, framed by the sun, and just as I took the picture, one of the riders waved.

Sunrise Summit

We hiked out into the dunes to watch the sun rise. Ahead of us, two of our friends were on their way to the top of a dune, framed by the first rays of dawn. It was a picture that simply begged to be taken.

The Eyes of a Child Soldier

Taken in the winding streets of Casablanca, this photo depicts a young Moroccan in a Spanish military uniform. He readily agreed to have his photo taken.

Omar

Omar is a mason in the Moroccan seaside town of Asilah. He stopped me while I was wandering around alone and engaged me in conversation. When I next looked at my watch, I noticed we’d been talking for over half and hour and I had to get back to our tour bus. I asked if I could have his portrait first, and he amiably agreed.

Their Grand Canyon

The fertile fields and towering cliffs that define this village are a natural contrast to the human contrasts of poverty and plenitude that define Morocco itself.

Jaywalker

In the mountains above Banos, which are only reachable by four-wheel drive or (our preferred method) powerful dirtbikes, little villages nestle in Andean valleys and the local livestock owns the place.
