I spent three months on Vorovoro, Fiji, with Tribewanted, an eco-community project working together sustainably with the local culture.
Every evening we had natural fireworks that would light up the horizon. This day, the rain clouds caught the sunset and divided the light, half to the sky and half to illuminate the ocean.
The Tribewanted team put together a scavenger hunt on Vorovoro, Fiji. These are three of the winners celebrating!
There are even more photos on the Tribewanted Flickr group – http://flickr.com/groups/tribewanted
This is one of the harbingers of the bounty that this garden will provide once summer gets into full swing. Nothing better than fresh pineapples! Except maybe fresh mangoes…
About once a week on Vorovoro all of the tribe members would get together with the local Chief, Tui Mali, for a ceremony welcoming new members and saying goodbye to departing members.
If it felt strange seeing local Fijians perform their cultural dances for tourists, it must seem even stranger for the tourists too get decked out in dancing costumes and put on a Meke for the local Fijians! But the Tribewanted members are always happy to oblige their hosts with Mekes that have been written just for them and their shared island Vorovoro.
Even the stormy mornings are majestic – it’s amazing the depth to the sky! This shot is looking out east. You can’t really see it, but in the distance is Exile Island from Survivor: Fiji
Right on que, not more than two days after it was put up, the wind started to blow for the new 400 watt wind turbine donated by Ecotricity in the UK. Finally, after a year without it, Power on VOROVOR!
Tribewanted’s doing something unique – creating a sustainable eco-tourist experience in the middle of a Fijian community. Wind power is just one of the ways that Tribewanted is making a sustainable impact.
