Reclining Buddha

Located at Wat Pho in Ka Ratanakosin, Bangkok, the Reclining Buddha is a draw for ardent Buddhists and camera-toting travelers alike. It measures in at 157 feet long and 49 feet high and is made of brick and plaster covered with gold leaf. For this shot, I tucked in among the columns near the entrance, avoiding the easier, but less dramatic shot from the Buddha’s feet.

Wellington Arch

The Wellington Arch was built to commemorate England’s victory in the Napoleonic Wars. It earned its current moniker when a statue honoring the 1st Duke of Wellington was placed on top. For this photograph, I focused on the 28 ft high bronze statue, which was set off by the brilliant afternoon sky. Viewing the statue from near the arch’s base, I was able to emphasize the movement of the chariot horses at its front.

Amok Curry and a Side of Monsoon

When I found myself on the deck of a floating guesthouse in Pnomh Penh with monsoon rains beating down on the thatched roof, I had nothing to do except order lunch – classic Cambodian Amok Curry – and wash it down with Angkor Beer.

Petronas Towers

The Petronas Towers, once the tallest building in the world, are glass-and-steel twin skyscrapers based on an Islamic-inspired geometric plan. In this shot I wanted to emphasize both the size of the towers and this unque plan. Well, to be honest, time was running out, so I just ducked out of my taxi, ran to the bottom of the Skyway, crossed my fingers, and clicked.

Good Luck 108 TImes

At Wat Pho in Bangkok, you can throw small metal disks one at a time into 108 metal bowls in hopes of good fortune. The number of bowls matches the number of religious scenes depicted on the nearby Reclining Buddha’s soles. The light clanking sound of the coins fills the temple as those hoping for their chance at luck stream by. For this photo, I walked to the marble entry stair to take advantage of the afternoon light, and then went to make my 108 wishes.
