My roommate and I took the bus downtown to see the historical sights! These included Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Ben Franklin’s house, the Second Bank, and the U.S. Postal museum.
We began our adventure in the Visitors’ Center where we obtained
After waiting in line for fifteen minutes to get through security, we were finally let in from the cold… and had the chance to see that most majestic of icons- the liberty bell! The exhibits housed in the same building gave an excellent background of the bell and its role as a symbol throughout the years.
The roots of the nation. A ranger gave us quite an excellent tour of the first and second floors.
Where the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Articles of Confederation were signed. The only original item in the room is the chair in the back. The seat was where George Washington presided over the delegates. There is a sun painted on the chair, concerning which Benjamin Franklin commented, “I have often…in the course of this session…looked at that…without being able to tell whether it was rising or setting; but now at length I have the happiness to know that it is a rising and not a setting sun.”
How amazing to stand in the room where our nation was born!
The Liberty Bell was originally housed in the bell tower. However it was later moved as the tower began to crumble. The Centennial bell was put in its place, which is there today. Let freedom ring!
A portrait of George Washington that we stumbled upon inside the historic Second Bank portrait gallery. I cannot tell a lie, it was impressive!
