Friends

I’ve never been what you would call a conventional traveler. I left home alone for the first time when I was 10 yrs old and I haven’t looked back since. I guess you could say starting young gave me a confidence most people lack, a confidence in myself and a confidence in my ability to survive anywhere in the world. You’re probably wondering, ‘what’s the problem?’ Well, the problem is I have this nasty habit of assuming things will work out for the best and completely neglecting to make any kind of plans. I tend to board planes with a plane ticket and a backpack and nothing else. I like to move around a lot, and I like to be free to do whatever might inspire me in the moment. Problem is most people think I’m nuts and few of my friends will travel with me, They prefer what I like to call ‘the travel agent package’. Even my little brother bailed on me mid-way through our trip in Europe. I met Adam two years ago and I cannot tell you how amazing he has been. Finally I have found somone who is willing to just throw everything to chance and follow me on my spur of the moment adventures. We’ve left our ‘real lives’ behind to spend a season skiing in Lake Tahoe. We’ve dropped everything to drive hours down the California coast and sleep in our car at the beach so we could surf epic waves. And once, when we’de had it with everything, we booked plane tickets for Costa Rica, drove to the passport office the next day to get Adam a new passport and then boarded the plane that night. I move quickly, I change my a lot, and I refuse to make plans. And these past two years Adam has been right there with me, ready and willing to go anywhere anytime. He’s been an amazing travel partner and after years of flying solo it’s nice to finally have someone to share my adventures with. I’ve spent the last yr going to graduate school in Sydney and we actually had planned for Adam to come visit for a few months. But he got sick and our plans were ruined. Instead, I spent my school break in Chicago where Adam was in and out of the hospital. There’s no real way to explain it, but things have been hard for us this past year. The up side is we made it, we pushed through all the bad and we made it. And I can’t think of a better way to put everything behind us then finally getting to have our Auastralian adventure together.
