My photo album
Jenn and I traveled to Egypt together in August of 2006. We cruised down the Nile River and conquered ancient temples and pyramids in the baking Egyptian heat. We’ve been best friends since elementary school, so dorming with her for two weeks was the only sleeping arrangement we knew. Together, we experienced a drastic new culture and learned so much from our first international excursion. We dressed up in Egyptian Galabeyas and ate their many different foods, our favorite being the babaganoush. During our visit to the Great Pyramids of Giza, two Egyptian men tried to con us out of our money. They took our cameras and used them as collateral, separated us, and literally picked us up and put us on six-feet tall camels while asking us for whatever we had, “one hundred, two hundred American dollars”. Jenn started to whimper so her Egyptian mugger set her down. She immediately ran to me, a few meters away, and caused a scene so my Egyptian mugger set me down as well. We both chucked a few crumpled dollars at them and ran. As crazy as that situation was, she didn’t leave me behind and we both made it out alive. We eventually figured out that we weren’t going to be harmed, but knowing that in a situation that required true actions and feelings to emerge, my best friend would be by my side. We work great as a team and our friendship has grown even stronger after the trip. With intense feelings of withdrawal, we decided that our next international voyage was going to be Australia, because just the thought of being south of the equator captured our attention and brought butterflies to our stomachs. But now that we’re both Freshmen in different colleges, trying to see each other on a constant basis is hard enough, let alone the thought of traveling together once again like we did in high school. This contest would be a great opportunity for me to travel with my best friend again because there is no one else I would love to explore Australia with, other than her. We have embraced a new and intense culture change together and we are ready to make more priceless memories and conquer the world one continent at a time.
