Viewing Album Chichen Itza

9 photos

These pictures were taken when my classmates and I went to Chichen Itza for the day. There’s an accompanying blog for it (somewhere) but my computer is being spastic and I can’t upload it yet. More to come.

El Castillo

This picture was taken near the end of our trip, about five minutes before they kicked us out. The light was fading (it gets dark around 5:45 pm here) but there was no one around the Great Pyramid, so I hung out until they herded me away, cursing me in Mayan the whole time for moving so slow.
Good times.

Too tall to have been Mayan

This is a Mayan doorway at Chichen, near the Great Observatory. I had a hard time fitting, as I’m close to 6’5” tall.
Oh well. Makes for a good picture,

El Castillo in light

Another shot of El Castillo, the main pyramid of Chichen… This is the pyramid that was recently declared one of the 7 man-made wonders of the world.

Observatory

This is the Mayan observatory, where they would… Observe.
But seriously, this is where they tracked movements of the stars, where they determined their ENTIRE calendar, and how they found out about all of their calendar stuff.

Grand cenote

This is at the very edge of the Grand Cenote, the large sinkhole from which the Mayans of Chichen Itza would make their sacrifices. They would send their victims (who were actually sort of volunteers) to the edge, fully dressed, decked out in their gold and their finery, and push them into it, where they would sink to the bottom to appease the Gods.
