Even though my little brother Justin is a good two heads above me at 6’5”, I keep him down to size with the affectionate nickname “lil boy” and my worldly wisdom (wink wink). Actually, we make a pretty good team as far as surviving the open road, which makes him my voyaging buddy of choice. Growing up in Ohio my family didn’t get out much, but then I got bit by the travel bug during college and have begun to pass on the contagion. I most recently taught him to surf in Malibu at the start of our cross-US summer road trip. We had some close calls on this journey, including his solo daily-run-turned-five-hour-ramble in the wilderness of Yosemite, and a brief, but interesting, two day recess in the small town of Spearfish, South Dakota after my engine belt went kaput. Justin’s never been abroad (too busy with school!) except for a brief family trip to Niagara Falls, when he somewhat inconveniently forgot the location of his driver’s license at the border. In short, I think this “lil boy” needs to get out… way out, like, Down Under. Australia for me? 3 ½ years ago, it’s my first time ever in a foreign country, all alone, and a friendly fellow hostel-goer helps me lug my massive suitcase up three flights of stairs, only to find I had the wrong room key. Australia for him? A place to explore, grow, figure out what a “hostel” is, and acquire some of his big sister’s worldly wisdom ;)
