I met Helen, my partner and best friend, six years ago selling knives. Yes, we both spent a college summer selling kitchen cutlery to family friends and random strangers, but that silly job brought our separate lives onto a single continuum. Since that time, our wonderful relationship has blossomed into a special commitment built on open communication and understanding. Most importantly, we share the mutual goal of promoting social justice for our local and global communities. In furtherance of this goal, we motivate each other to understand cultural differences that lead to inequalities. Additionally, we inspire each other to advocate solutions to the dire social and economic injustices present in the world today. To accomplish these goals, I received my law degree and am currently specializing in public interest environmental law. I will use this knowledge to fight for oppressed communities in need of legal assistance to protect the shared resources of air, water, and land from further environmental degradation. Helen has also committed herself to promoting the public interest through implementation of public health strategies that address serious health concerns plaguing low-income communities both domestically and abroad. Although we are both very committed to accomplishing recognizable progress in our fields, our decisions to work for the public interest preclude us from traveling extensively because of financial constraints and mounting educational debt. Thus, Helen and I would be a perfect fit for the Australian Adventure because we would not only enjoy the beauty and recreation that Australia offers, but we would also balance that with a sincere attempt to understand the culture of Australia on an intimate level. This equilibrium is fundamental to our style of travel because we think that fun and culture are co-extensive and must be placed on equal footing on any adventure. Helen followed this balanced approach when she conducted human rights research in Kenya’s largest slum and when she coordinated a project to educate rural communities about malaria prevention in Uganda. We would love the opportunity to travel together in Australia with this concept in mind. Although we’ll undoubtedly be happy into old age (as illustrated by the joking glimpse into the future in the attached picture), we would really love to see Australia while we are young enough to appreciate all that it offers.
