A resident of Lucerne, an old lady who has lived in the city her entire life, led us to this monument. Built into the side of the mountain, it apparently inspired Mark Twain—he called it “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world”. It was built to commemorate the deaths of all the Swiss soliders killed during the French revolution
