In Colombia, South America exists an island in the pacific ocean called Gorgona, which became famous because in the 1950´s it was a prison like Alkatraz . Nowadays many scientists visit the island to study the many exotic animal species living there. In 2004 we visited Gorgona. While we were there, we participated as volunteers for a scientific program that wanted to help endangered sea turtles. We had to follow a procedure that consisted in going in the ocean during midnight looking for sleeping turtles. Once we found one, we called an expert who helped us going underwater, shaking the turtle, turning it around so the turtle woke up, and by swimming, pulled us to the top of the water. At that point we took turtles to the beach from where the scientists carried then to their specialized labs where we could observe how they washed them and practice all the necessary medical procedures to make sure they were healthy, and finally they tagged them so they could study their behavior in future opportunities. During this trip we also had the opportunity to see whales, sharks, blue crabs, blues lizards, go to the prison, dive and admire the fascinating nature found in the island.
