My best mate and I knew we would be studying abroad for a semester since we were freshman. However, at the time, we did not know we would be going together. It was not until junior year of university that we were, without a doubt, going to be each other’s travel companions. After considering several options, we decided that London was the best fit for both of us; and we sent off our applications to become students in a place neither of us had ever been. The experiences, changes, and growth we shared with each other can only be touched on in a brief essay because they are innumerable. While we were jet-setting from one country to another on weekends, we still played the roles of young adult women in life. We were lucky to be with each other during some pivotal moments in both of our lives. She was with me for my first ride on an airplane, while we were with each other our first time getting sick on a ferry. I had a date with a Brit, while she had her first kiss with an Aussie. She had an irrational crush on the guy from Rhode Island, while I had an irrational crush on the technician in the computer lab. She was with me when I found out my luggage was heavier than allowed on the plane, and I was with her when she found out that her credit card had reached its maximum limit. We were there for one another during long hours waiting for our train, our plane, or our bus. Most of all, we were there for one another. Because of our decision to move to a new country where we would live with each other, go to class with each other, and travel with each other, we bonded in a way that many best mates may never experience. I know, after graduating university and beginning separate lives, when I think of her and look back on our days of knowing each other, our experiences traveling abroad together will absolutely be the first thing that will revisit my mind. Getting the opportunity to expand our travels together to Australia will surely add to these priceless memories.
