Friends

She took off her sandals, holding them between two fingers and a thumb. Gently she lowered them to her side as she began to test the temperature of the tides. She cringed a moment, as the pulsing liquid first poured over her feet. Then, as if some child-like animal instinct had taken over, she chased the waves back out to their source.

She gave into the ebb and flow of the sea for some time, flowing like the waves and following their ripples back out to sea. As I watched her play, I took a seat, stretching out along that sandy shore. We stayed in this place, our place, for the rest of the day; I took my pictures as she frolicked in the ocean’s company.

This day was ours, belonging only to us, a reconciliation of sorts, a new beginning from a most upsetting end. Unlike before, we had grown now, ending those years of friendship for something more, and realizing the error of our ways. We shared that view as friends this day, two people coming together to reminisce over past events; the good, the bad, and all the love which had filled the time between. We spoke of life, philosophy, and Scooby-Doo that day; however, I was careful to neglect the foremost thought on my mind that day. Thoughts of the sun, of the beach, of the soothing waves’ rhythm and how they all seemed to fall away when I looked at her. The day was cool, an agreeable type of comfortable for anyone who would experience the weather that day; yet, I was sweltering in such company. All I wanted, standing there before me, but I could do nothing more than yearn and keep my silence.

Time passed by swiftly, and before I knew it, this day was nearing conclusion. We moved about the night time city, making conversation and silent pleas with each of our eyes. I told myself we were over, it had been a different time then, it had been a different day.
