What I miss most about the UK

on 8/9/07, Mathurin5 posted:
So, my favorite city in the world is London. And I was a bit sad today that I A) don't have any pictures online of myself there to share and B) haven't been there since MARCH of 2004. This is ridiculous... I need to plan a trip there soon. Maybe even for a long weekend in the fall, when the prices drop.

Without further ado, here's a random list of what I miss:

- Hobnobs

- drinking tea

- my ridiculous washer/dryer 1-unit combo that ruined all my clothes

- riding the train nightly across the Thames

- minding the gap

- Sisters Avenue flat with a rooftop, Mary Poppins-style view

- pound for a pint nights

- all the world's accents in one Tube carriage

- Camden Market

- for that matter, Portobello Road, too... and Brick Lane

- heck, shopping in general

- affordable, world-class theater

- Royal National Theater

- Time Out's music guide

- CDs coming out a day earlier than the US

- Battersea Arts Centre

- IC's campus off of Gloucester Road

- Bill Sheasgreen

- Wagamama's (luckily, the first US ones opened up this summer here in Boston!)

- cheap flights anywhere and the Continent only two-and-a-half hours away

- six-hour workdays

- no working on weekends

- softball in the park

- being able to be considered a baller on the courts, simply 'cause I could dribble with both hands

- racy telephone booth adverts

- Holy Trinity Brompton

- Charlotte Street

- 1 pound Asda pizzas

- calibrating my water heater

- smoking fags

- obnoxious exchange rates

- meeting up in pubs, instead of coffee shops

- St. Martin-in-the-Fields

I've probably got more... anyone else live in London before? What do you miss? Comment back...

Yep, there’s much excitement for Wagamama’s in this office. Starting Monday, we can go there for lunch every day!

Me, I miss Waitrose the most. Best grocery store, EVER :)

You know… I was never a huge Waitrose fan… probably because the closest ones to me were always too small and too urban and too costly. Asda all the way! (And, btw, the only version of Wal-Mart I’ve ever liked)

I wish we had Next here in Boston, or Topshop, or Dorothy Perkins…

Asda is good—their clothes and accessories are actually cute, and wicked cheap. I love when people compliment me on stuff I got there and I just demure and say, “oh, I got it in the UK.” Sounds much more sophisticated than “Oh, I got it in the UK’s version of Walmart…”

Never bought clothes at Asda… but I always did my grocery shopping there and outfitted my flat. Great place! Crappy carts, though… or “carriages.”
