I am intrigued by culture. Can't help it. I love experiencing new places, new people, new foods...new culture. Everywhere I go, I try to experience as much as I can outside of "American" culture that I can. It's not as easy to do as you may think, either. Everywhere I go, I see American restaurants, people trying to dress like Americans, American music is playing. When I go to a new country, I want to experience that country.
That being said, Afghanistan is an amazing place to go and experience a neew culture. Anyone who reads this is probably thinking, "Afghanistan? Is this guy crazy? Why would I want to go to Afghanistan?" Well, how about for an adventure? The way I figure it, I can sit on my couch, watch the travel channel, watch Man vs. Wild, and I can wish I were having all sorts of crazy adventures in new and interesting places, or I can make it happen. So, I did. I went to Afghanistan, and I was surprised. Not only is Afghanistan not a desert wasteland, parts of it can be quite luscious and fertile. It's an amazing place, and the thing I liked most was the people.
Humble service, that is how I would describe them. They are so welcoming to people, even foreigners. They will create a four course, delicious meal at the knock of the door. They willtake care of your every need at absolute loos to themselves for nothing. They are a truly hospitable people. In regions where danger may be lurking, they even take responsibility of you. This is something totally foreign to us as Americans who often would not fight for anyone or anything but ourselves (obviously an exaggeration). They will physically protect you from harm at the price of their own lives. It's pretty cool.
I definitely think it is important for everyone in the world to travel and experience new cultures. I believe that each culture has something engrained within it that is totally different from any other culture, and I believe that we would all do well to learn those things when we visit, and implement them when we return to our homes.
