Ok so being my first post i thought I would talk about trips I have done in the past. i have traveled all over but thus far my fav destination is the boundary waters. For anyone who has never been, I insist you go. For a week (or two if you are really intense) you paddle from lake to lake, portaging (picking up and carrying your 70 lbs canoe and/or 45 lbs pack a half a mile through a swamp or up a rock face)w hen you get to the end. you may think to yourself ... no problem 45 pounds isnt that heavy. Wrong. It is seriously hard work, especially for the uncoordinated non-physically fit camper like myself. However if you do decide to take a trip of you own here are some tips that I have learned over the years...
Bring your own food, it is totally worth carrying the extra 30 pounds when you get to sit down and enjoy a nice hamburger on night one. One of my personal favorites are Bobulli pizzas, you cna just toast them over hot coals and make a little aluminum tent so the cheese will melt
Get the right type of packs, Every year we pass a group and launch because they decided to go the cheap route and carry their gear around in trash bags. Trust me it doesn't work.
Only one person should carry a canoe. i couldn't believe my eyes last year when we pulled up to a portage and saw a group of three carrying a canoe. you aways want to single portage if you can so pack light so you can get everything across in one trip.
Mess with the boys scouts. Sorry boys, but your expressions are just two priceless. If you are a girl and you come across a group of boyscouts on a portage, show them whos boss. Aka pick up a canoe and carry it, for some reason they always seem amazed.
Bring a hammok. enough said.
Go cliff jumping. Defianly a must do if you travel to BWCA. If your really up for a thrill try and make it out to the cliffs on Makwa (a tiny lake way out east). they range from about 10-50 feet and are lots of fun)
Visit louisa falls, and if your willing to get up early enough, camp there. there is this awesome pool at the top that you can go sit in and relax. also if you really want there is a nice place to string a hammock in the center of the falls, but its kinda buggy and theres always a lot of people.
Use Timber Trails outfitting (your welcome bill) We have use him for the past 5 years and I have not once had a complaint.
Take a nice camera. You will have to buy a pelican case, which can be bulky and heavy, but its well worth it.
Last but not least, DO NOT bring an ipod. It completely defeats the purpose of being in nature.
