I spent a day in Blackpool (Northwest-ish coast of England). I've tried really hard not to have expectations for things on this trip, because then they always turn out spectacular (i.e., no disappointments). And I really don't know where/why I had a certain expectation of Blackpool, but I did. And when I got there, I was - to say the least - slightly creeped out. Not so much in an I-don't-feel-safe-I-think-I-am-going-to-get-mugged kind of way, but just the kind of feeling where something just doesn't seem right. I shall try to explain.
So it's like this unending strip of "gaming arcades", and carnival food and games. Except, everything was sort of... dirty. Caleb and I used to watch this movie as a kid called "Little Nemo" and it seriously felt like a scene from that movie. So anyway, there were all these kids like stuffing themselves with cotton candy and adults mindlessly playing "arcade games" and everyone just seemed sort of oblivious to everything. I don't know if that makes sense, but it was really quite odd.
Oh, and they had these massive Doctor Who lights lining the streets, which I found pretty exciting. I later discovered yet another Doctor Who museum there, which I resisted (three cheers for Ariel!). Highlights would be the beach, for sure. And possibly my first "English Breakfast" (the hostel I booked turned out to be a bed and breakfast), which consisted of cereal, toast (that was really toasty), eggs, sausage, bread, fried bread (??), beans, & some really tough beef jerky-like thing. The beans were quite odd to say the least; and I really don't understand how they can eat that much food. I think they get props for having such variety in a single meal though, I'll give them that.
