While traveling in Ukraine, one might want to take a tour through the Chernobyl Nuclear Exclusion Zone. You have to pre-pay for the tour which will run about $300 for a single person. Each additional person in a group will lower that rate. The tour is an amazing experience. The risk of radiation overdose is extremely low and the total radiation absorbed during the day long tour is equal to that absorbed during a trans Atlantic flight from NY to Paris.
Groups receive a special briefing at the nuclear reactor site on the history of the accident, currenty status of the reactor containment and future plans for the site. After this, groups are taken to the abandoned city. Entrance to most buildings is allowed. After touring the city, groups are taken back to Chernobyl town, which houses most of the nuclear power plant staff members (aprox. 6000 people still work at the power plants' three decomissioned reactors). At the tour offices, a large lunch is served with food grown outside the exclusion zone. If you have the time and the funds, this tour is more than worth it.
