08.09.09 - Mexico Adventure

I've been largely stuck at home for the past month or so, unfortunately, but have managed to squeeze in a few more "domestic" trips. Living in Arizona, I venture down to Mexico with my family quite often. We generally end up in Rocky Point (which has recently become a tourist haven - ugh!), however this time we ventured a bit West down into Baja California and stayed in Calafia, Mexico.

My roommate from when I spent a semester abroad in Canada came to stay with me, so she joined us as well, which was even more awesome. Don't get me wrong, I love my family, but there's something about traveling with friends that I find really fantastic. Anyway, it was really great to see a different side of Mexico. I feel like a lot of times when we travel somewhere, we only see such a small part of the place. Then our view of that place is forever stuck in this mindset of whatever tiny bit we've seen. So going to a different part - albeit still only skimming the surface - of Mexico was really exciting for me.

I could probably write for ages about my travel experiences everywhere, but I'll spare you the novel-length and share the highlights. We were walking around town perusing through shops and such, when we heard music coming from an alleyway. Naturally, we head that way to see what's up, only to find a handful of people with buckets of paint and brushes. They were going to town painting this random wall in an alleyway in the middle of downtown. It was fascinating, because there were all these random people who didn't know each other and they were painting this wall together. I know that probably sounds dorky or cliche', but it was seriously fantastic. One of the ladies saw us and quickly put cups of paint and brushes into our hands and we joined the fun. It was really amazing, and even though I didn't know any of those people, it kind of felt like we were a community. I won't lie, I'm a sucker for completely unexpected things. I live for moments like these, times where I can paint a TARDIS on a wall next to a completely random stranger and still feel like a part of a community.

Seriously, how often does that happen

Hello!
I’m planning on traveling to Mexico sometime this year, and was wondering if you had any good ideas for places to go/ things to see, etc. Is it easy enough to travel around on pretty poor knowledge of spanish?
Also, the painting sounds like it was absolutely amazing. I love it when random things like that happen.
Thanks for your help!
Whitney
