Simply, don't go near any tour if you can. Find people to talk to; maybe you will get lucky and they will show you the real county that your in.

When I visit...Other countries I familiarize myself with cultural differences before entering that country. I always plan ahead then drift about.
ALWAYS bring your camera. The day you forget will be the day you need it the most.
When I travel, I always bring a mesh duffle bag tucked inside my suitcase for dirty laundry or souvenirs!
Try everything once, don't let society or your comfort zone cause you to miss out on an amazing experience, possibly a newfound love. Be open minded and learn to experience the world using all senses!
Have a sense of humor and you will get along with everyone and make the overall experience great.
Have a sense of adventure and take every oppurtunity you can. Knowing that you might not ever be able to visit a place again should give you the drive to see everythign you can and truly become a part of the trip.
