If you are studying abroad, check out cell phone plans. I got a phone plan in Italy (no contracts!) for 15euro/month for UNLIMITED calls to the United States!
Create a soundtrack for your trip before you leave.
Fill your ipod with new music before you leave town.
Always photocopy your travel documents, so that way when you lose the real ones, the US embassy has something to go on! Trust me! I know this from experience!
I always travel with a canvas bag. Not only does it help the environment, but is a very good way to carry along souvenir overflow! Plus, it's hard to find a real good bag in some countries, so coming equipped with one is essential!
When I travel I always carry a first aid kit, camera, and a roll of toilet paper (if you take the cardboard roll out if it, it is much easier to pack).
